The prickly pear, also known as tuna or cactus fruit, is a vibrant, oval fruit that grows on the edges of flat cactus paddles. Beneath its protective skin (which features tiny, hair-like prickles) lies a strikingly colorful flesh—ranging from neon pink to golden orange. Native to the Americas, specifically Mexico and the Southwestern United States, the prickly pear has been a dietary staple for Indigenous peoples for thousands of years.
