The origins of cauliflower trace back to the Mediterranean region, specifically ancient Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). It was popular in Italy during the Roman era and eventually spread across Europe in the 16th century. Historically, it was refined from wild cabbage into the many colorful varieties (purple, orange, and green) we see today.
While available year-round in most markets, cauliflower is a cool-weather crop. Its peak harvest seasons are Spring and Autumn, as extreme heat can cause the heads to become bitter or “ricey.”
