Description
The pineapple is the ultimate tropical icon, famous for its prickly, golden-brown exterior and its vibrant, juicy yellow flesh. It offers a bold, refreshing explosion of sweetness with a signature tangy finish. Whether sliced into rings for grilling, diced into a fresh fruit salad, or juiced for a tropical cocktail, its unique texture and flavor make it a global favorite.
Native to the Amazon basin in South America (between southern Brazil and Paraguay), pineapples were cultivated by the Tupi-Guarani people and spread throughout the continent and the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus was the first European to encounter the fruit in Guadeloupe in 1493. Because they were so rare and expensive to transport to Europe, they became a symbol of extreme wealth and hospitality in the 17th and 18th centuries—often used as centerpiece decorations rather than being eaten.
While pineapples are available year-round due to tropical farming, their peak season is typically from March through July. It takes a single pineapple plant nearly two years to produce a single fruit, making every harvest a patient labor of love.
