Passion fruit is a tropical power-house known for its wrinkled purple or smooth yellow rind and its aromatic, jelly-like golden pulp. It delivers an intense, tangy-sweet flavor profile that is unmatched in the fruit world. Native to South America, specifically Southern Brazil through Paraguay and Northern Argentina, passion fruit was “discovered” by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century. They named it “Flor de las cinco llagas” (Flower of the five wounds) because they believed the unique structure of the plant’s flower represented the Passion of Christ. By the 19th century, it had spread to Australia, Hawaii, and Africa, becoming a global tropical staple.

Passion fruit is a Summer and Autumn fruit. The vines typically produce two main crops a year in tropical climates, with the heaviest harvests occurring from July through September and again in the Winter months in frost-free regions. The fruit is at its sweetest when the skin begins to wrinkle, signaling a peak sugar content.
