Description
Dragon fruit is a stunning tropical treasure with a vibrant, scaly pink or yellow exterior and a speckled interior of white or magenta flesh. It has a light, refreshing sweetness—often described as a cross between a kiwi and a pear—with tiny, crunchy edible seeds. It’s perfect for vibrant smoothie bowls, fresh fruit salads, or simply chilled and eaten with a spoon.
Despite its exotic Eastern name, dragon fruit is actually native to Central and South America (specifically Mexico, Guatemala, and Nicaragua). It was introduced to Vietnam and Southeast Asia by the French in the 1800s, where it flourished and earned the name “Thanh Long” (Green Dragon). Today, it is a global symbol of tropical luxury and health.
Dragon fruit is a Summer and Autumn fruit. Because it grows on a climbing cactus, it thrives in heat and typically produces fruit from June through December. In many tropical regions, the plants flower and fruit in cycles throughout the warmer months.
